New Low-Cost Air Service to Knock
By Jon Myles
New low-fares airline
MyTravelLite has
reported a fantastic response to its new route into Ireland.More than
8,000 passengers have already booked flights on the new Birmingham to Knock
route just days before the first service takes to the skies.
The cut-price airline begins flights on the new route on March 30.
It will be the only direct flight in operation between the west of Ireland
and the British Midlands.
The service will be using state-of-the-art Airbus A320 aircraft carrying
180 passengers. It is hoped it could carry as many as 50,000 passengers
a year.
And MyTravelLite
said the initial success of the service has been helped by an encouraging
response from the business and tourism community in support of the service.
Company managing director Tim Jeans said: “The welcome we have had from
Knock Airport, Tourism Ireland and business interests in the Borders, Midlands
and West region has been brilliant.
“And in turn we are on target to bring 50,000 new visitors to the region,
which has been denied access to the UK’s largest market outside London for
far too long.”
Travel experts have also welcomed the service as another much-needed
access route into Ireland from outside London.
Industry analyst John Farrer said: “This opens up another area of Ireland
to a large part of the population outside London.
“It means cheap fares and convenient travel for people in the Midlands
and is sure to boost tourist numbers to that part of Ireland.
“It can only be good for Ireland and for passengers. It seems certain
the service will grow at a rapid rate.”
