The heartbeat of Connemara

The population of Clifden and the surrounding area is just under 2,000.

Clifden provides Connemara with an infrastructure that supports local trade and industry as well as attracting huge interest from abroad.

This has contributed to the cultural diversity of the town, strong growth in tourism and the emergence of Clifden as a thriving commercial centre.

A broader spectrum of facilities are a short distance from Clifden.

An hour’s drive south-west on the N59 leads to Galway City which provides a wealth of shopping, entertainment and business activities.

An hour north-west brings you to the town of Westport in Co. Mayo.

Employment

Sales, the professions and the service industry are dominant and provide 55 per cent of the employment in Clifden with manufacturing employment contributing 16 per cent and direct agricultural employment making up 6.3 per cent of the total workforce.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

Ireland’s Minister for Community and Rural Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív has announced a grant of ?475,000 to buy land which will be used for the construction of an airstrip near Clifden.

The airstrip is expected to cost ?4.9million and will service the island community of Inishbofin off the coast of Galway.

Construction of the airstrip on the island is currently under way at a cost of ?2.2million.

The community of Inishbofin currently travel by boat to avail of services such as doctors and social welfare.
