Golf clubs warned to keep the fees down
TOURISM body Failte Ireland has warned golf clubs in the country to keep a tight check on green fees to avoid pricing themselves out of the market.
Failte Ireland’s director of golf Damian Ryan is writing to all golf clubs to urge them to keep costs down next year.
Mr Ryan said: “There is a concern that we are in danger of becoming a pricey destination for golf and the industry will be informed by me that if you are charging these prices you must have the level of service to go with it.”
The K Club in Kildare is currently Ireland’s most expensive course at £184 a round. But despite its high price the course fails to make it into the prestigious Golf Magazine rankings of the Top 100 courses in the world.
Mr Ryan warned there was a danger that high-priced golf clubs could distort the image of Irish golfing to foreigners.
He said a small number of courses could give Ireland the reputation of being very expensive —when many places were offering excellent value for money.
Ireland has seen a boom in the construction of new courses over the past 10 years, with speculation growing that former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey’s Abbeville estate in Kinsealy could be turned into an exclusive club.
