| Tyrone’s impressive start to the new year
There was a busy programme of Gaelic football activity last weekend in
all four provinces.
As part of the preparation for the forthcoming national league which
begins early next month 19 games took place.
In Ulster All-Ireland football champions and McKenna Cup holders Tyrone
made a perfect start to 2006 with a seven-point victory over Down.
Although manager Mickey Harte fielded a predominantly second string team
first-half goals from Aidan McCarron and Brian Meenan gave the O’Neill
County a commanding position at half-time with the holders eventually
winning by 2-12 to 0-11.
University of Ulster, Jordans-
town forced a deserved draw with an under-strength Arm-
agh. UUJ’s Ruairí Convery scored the only goal in the first-half as the
sides played out a low-scoring affair.
Other highlights from Ulster included Cavan’s seven-point victory over
Fermanagh thanks to second-half goals from Paul Brady and Jason
O’Reilly.
In Munster Tommy Murphy Cup winners Tipperary hosted Cork Institute of
Technology in the preliminary round of the McGrath Cup at Ardfinnan.
An early Declan Browne goal set up a narrow one-point victory for the
Premier County who now meet Cork in the quarter-final.
The FBD Insurance league in Connacht produced some interesting results.
Mayo beat NUIG while Sligo’s one-point victory over Connacht champ-
ions Galway at Tuam was among the highlights. Dom Corrigan’s men
produced a fine second-half comeback to take a one-point victory with
Seán Davey and Mark Breheny getting all Sligo’s 10 points between them.
