Looney has Erin dancing to his tune

JOHN MITCHELS 1-5
SONS OF ERIN 0-3

Intermediate Football League

John Mitchels continued their excellent start to the new season with a comfortable defeat of Sons of Erin at the weekend.

James Looney was the star man for the Mitchels contributing a classy 1-3 to their total in what was a tense, low-scoring match played in terrible weather conditions.

There wasn’t much between the teams in the first-half as both sides battled for possession in key areas of the field.

But Sons of Erin missed plenty of chances while Mitchels took the gilt-edge opportunities which came their way.

The Mitchels’ defence were on top for most of the game while their attackers moved the ball far quicker in difficult conditions than the Northampton lads who sometimes laboured a little too much in attack.

Also the Sons of Erin midfield lacked a creative spark to create space for the forwards in front of them.

Points from Mark Leach, and Looney (two) set Mitchels on their way in the first-half.

But there was never more than a couple of points between the sides until Looney’s goal midway through the second-half effectively ended the game as a contest.

Fittingly, it was Looney who wrapped up the scoring with a fine individual point.

But while he deservedly claimed the plaudits it was the hard work of his team mates — such as centre-back Barry Sharkey and James Hill — which really gave Mitchels the edge and enabled them to claim the victory.

The Birmingham side have now won three of their opening four league games.

It’s a record which makes them serious contenders for the county Intermediate title in Warwickshire later this year.

In the other tie scheduled for Warwickshire this weekend O’Rahillys received a walkover from The Gaels.
