Winning Post

With David Thorpe

With the flat season having settled into its rhythm and the summer jumps season in full swing The Irish Post will this week look at the horses to follow over the summer months.

Creachadoir

Yet another excellent performer from the Jim Bolger yard. This charger might not quite have the talent of Teofilo or Finsceal Beo but this colt has plenty of ability and will win some tidy races over the course of the summer. He can definitely be the horse to brighten up your summer days.

Davinia

When this horse won the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket last week his jockey Jamie Spencer was asked whether he would be keeping the ride for the rest of the summer — the Tipperary man replied: “They will have to shoot me to get me off this horse.” This tells you all you need to know about this filly.

She looked like a horse with a lot to learn that day but is improving all the time and will be a major contender for the Oaks and a host of other filly races between now and the end of the season.

Yeats

Aidan O’Brien’s star stayer is apparently getting better with age. My spies in Ballydoyle tell me this horse has improved since last year. And if that is the case then Yeats will win some tasty races this season. The Ascot Gold Cup will be the centrepiece of his year but there are many more races for this horse to win in 2007.

Eagle Mountain

This three-year-old was gaining ground at the end of the 2,000 Guineas hinting that a longer trip will bring out the best in him.

Whether the Derby is quite within his capabilities is debatable but there are plenty of big middle distance prizes to be won with this horse in the coming weeks and months.

Pacolet

A good recent winner on the flat in Ireland. Pacolet could be seen over jumps at the Galway Festival in August. There are many more good races both over jumps and on the flat for this excellent and consistent horse which he is capable of claiming. The horse, trained in Waterford by Pat Flynn, has huge potential and there are few trainers better at manipulating the handicap than the jovial Dungarvan man, so this horse could be at the start of a winning streak.

Latino Magic

Robbie Osbourne’s gelding always performs well in the summer months. A superb habndicapper who can also acquit himself well in listed company. Latino Magic is consistent and wants the ground on the soft side of good to run at his best. Keep an eye on him at the Galway Festival and in Dubai.

This week’s horses to watch…

Thursday 2.05 Perth:
TIP: Top Cloud
This horse is starting to creep up the weights but should be good enough to win here for a top yard in a not very strong race. Extremely good chance.

Thursday 2.35 Perth:
TIP: Lord Henry
Phillip Hobbs sends this horse to Scotland hoping that he can regain his old form, given that he is moving to a more competitive handicap mark and a much easier race than the last, this horse has to be one of the bets of the week.

Thursday 3.35 Perth:
TIP: Heigrid
Tony Martin doesn’t send many horses to Scotland but if this horse travels he will be a bet of the week. Has excellent form and the softer the ground the better. A wonderful chance.

Friday 6.10 Aintree
TIP: Hautclan
This is a very competitive race. This horse has the advantage of a good recent run behind him, something which puts him considerably ahead of his main rival.

Friday 6.30 Hamilton
TIP: Cayman Fox
This horse has run well without winning on his two career starts to date so he is due a win here. This is quite a tough race but he has a fine chance of opening his account.

Friday 8.00 Hamilton
TIP: Calabash Cove
This horse runs in this race off a very low weight and certainly has the form to claim a first career win. If he runs here he is the bet of the week.
