Young London hurler dies in car accident The British
GAA world has been rocked by the death of Sean Michael Kennedy.
The 19-year-old lost his life in a car accident on Friday, January 4 while
travelling home from college in Liverpool, where he was training to become
an airline pilot.
Sean was a member of Sean Treacys Hurling Club from a very young age.
A hugely talented player, he rose through the underage system at Treacys,
breaking through to the senior side last year.
“He was an excellent player,” said Sean Treacys secretary
Michael Maher. “He played in the backs, wing-back mostly, and was
a very polished hurler.
“It was something which came naturally to him.
“Last year he made breakthrough into the Senior side. He played
in the ‘B’ team the year previous, but we didn’t have
one last year, so he moved up to Senior and didn’t look out of place
at all.
“He headed off to college in Liverpool but would travel home at
weekends for training and for matches.”
Sean’s ability didn’t go unnoticed at county level either
and he represented London at underage levels, as well as playing some
football.
“He represented London at under-14 in the Feile na Gael,”
said Maher. “And at under-16 and minor in inter-county.
“He comes from a big family. Martin Carroll was a cousin of his,
as was John Carroll the Tipperary hurler.”
A funeral service will take place at St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic
Church, London Road, North Cheam on Tuesday, January 22 at 12 noon.
Only family flowers are requested but, if desired, donations for the Great
Ormond Street Hospital may be sent c/o W.A. Truelove & Son Ltd, 31
High Street, Cheam, SM3 8RE. Tel: 020 8642 3300.
Sean is survived by his parents, Paul and Anne, brothers James and Liam
and sisters Sarah and Ellen, and grandparents Mick and Mary Maunsell.
He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.
May he rest in peace. |
