Young Coatbridge GAA stars on tour in Derry Gaelic
football in and around the Lanarkshire town of Coatbridge in Scotland
continues to grow as a result of some local sporting initiatives.
Recently youngsters from several schools in the area took part in an educational,
cultural and sporting visit to the Watty Grahams GAA Club in Maghera,
Co. Derry.
The visit’s central purpose was to take part in Gaelic football
coaching and games sessions.
This proved to be very successful and the kids, aged between nine and
14, believe that once their season restarts after the Winter break they
will be able to demonstrate all they have learned from Donal Convery and
former Derry and Mayo coach Mickey Moran, a native of Maghera.
Apart from the football, the kids also visited several well known historical
sites guided by a local schoolteacher. First stop was Grianán of
Aileach in Co. Donegal, an ancient hill fort said to have been built by
the Tuatha De Danann in 1700 BC.
Next up was a visit to the famed walls around the city of Derry and finally
to the Tower Museum in the city.
Teachers, coaches and kids all agreed they had a wonderful time and can’t
wait until they get an opportunity to do the same again some time.
