Waterford prove too hot for Cork to handle

Cork 2-15 Waterford 0-25
Allianz NHL Division 1A

By GRAHAM CLIFFORD

Cork could not make their numerical advantage count as Munster neighbours Waterford humbled the All-Ireland Champions in Sunday’s League game.

In front of a crowd of 8,000 at Pairc Ui Rinn Justin McCarthy’s troops made it two Allianz Hurling League wins in a row.

A fast and furious first-half saw Waterford on top with Man of-the-match Eoin Kelly and able partner in crime Paul Flynn tormenting the normally reliable Cork backs.

At half-time Waterford led by 0-13 to 1-7 even though Seamus Prendergast was dismissed for an incident with Cork’s Diarmuid O’Sullivan after just 18 minutes.

Backed by a large travelling contingent Waterford scored two early second-half points from Flynn and corner forward Conor Carey moving them five points clear.

John Mullane was once again a handful and along with fellow substitute Dan Shanahan continued to mount pressure on Cork. By the time Neil Ronan found the net for the Leesiders it was too late to stop the Deise from going top of Division 1A.

Elsewhere in the top tier Wexford got revenge for last year’s All-Ireland quarter-final defeat when they easily disposed of a Clare side in the midst of controversy.

Ex-manager Ger Loughnane has been publicly critical of some of Clare’s backroom staff and judging by the performance he may be onto something.

However to be fair Wexford’s 2-13 to 0-11 victory had more to do with their slick, fast, clever moves than Clare’s inability.

In the third Division 1A game of the weekend Offaly just had enough in the tank to scrape past Down by 1-18 to 1-14. The result puts the men from the faithful county in second place in the league.
