Want-away Petrov off to Portsmouth

It looks as if Celtic will finally relent and sell want-away Stilian Petrov this week.

Martin O’Neill has confirmed he doesn’t have the cash for a big money signing and it is understood the player will sign for Portsmouth despite pleas from Strachan and the player’s teammates to reconsider the move and concentrate on the Champions League and a new-look SPL.

Petrov will be sold on for somewhere in the region of £6.5million and not the £10million suggested by the tabloids. Martin O’Neill admitted his interest in the player after a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

He said: “I spoke to Gordon Strachan but don’t want to say too much about it. Of course I’d like to get a few players in because we haven’t got the biggest squad in the world.”

Celtic’s Evander Sno has advised Gordon Strachan not to sign Dutchman Thomas Gravesen. As Celtic look to strengthen their defence the player believes that he can do the best job.

Sno said: “Celtic have been linked to Gravesen for many months now but I know I can do the job instead. The Scottish game is what I expected. Every game is tough physically and I knew it would be like that.

“It suits my style of play as I’m strong and I’m good with the ball at my feet. Celtic are a bigger club than Feynoord. I came here to play in the first team and I want as many games as possible.”

Craig Beattie has spoken in defence of Kenny Miller and his Celtic goal drought. The former Rangers player has yet to hit the back of the net for the Hoops but Beattie believes he can translate his goal success in training to the SPL.

He said: “There are three of us-Kenny, Magic and myself going for two striking places.

“I’ve been through all of this before when Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton and John Hartson were at the club. “It could be bad news for me if Kenny goes on a run of goals but it’s up to me to get in there first.”

Had it not been for injury the player would already have cemented himself in the starting line-up.

He said: “The hamstring injury could not have come along at a worse time. I was in the middle of my longest run in Celtic’s first team when it happened but there’s no point in dwelling on the past.”
