Tyrone star McGuigan breaks leg

Tyrone’s hopes of successfully defending their All-Ireland title
suffered a serious setback this week with the news that star centre forward
Brian McGuigan will miss all of the Ulstermen’s championship games
this year after breaking his leg in a club match.
The 25-year-old Ardboe man was left writhing in pain after a 50-50 challenge
while playing in the Tyrone Senior Championship. Such was the extent of
the player’s injury that an ambulance had to be called and the game
abandoned.
Initial reports indicate that the leg is broken in two places, which rules
the Red Hand star out until the 2007 league at the earliest.
McGuigan was one of the stars of the Tyrone team as they won the Sam Maguire
last year and also played a crucial part in Tyrone claiming the All-Ireland
title in 2003 with his deep running creating the space for other forwards
such as Eoin Mulligan to exploit, while his crucial long range points
in the replay against Dublin will be remembered for the boost they gave
to the Ulstermen.
Tyrone manager Mickey Harte described the injury as horrendous and said:
“It’s terrible for Brian and his family, our thoughts are
with them first and foremost, but he is a serious loss to Tyrone this
year as well.”
