Towers are crushed by rampant Gaels

Tir Chonaill Gaels fully deserved their place in this year’s semi-final after a comprehensive 12-point victory over Round Towers in the Senior Championship on Sunday.

Only a week after their memorable triumph over Parnells, the Towers looked well below the standard required for Championship contention after a disappointing second-half performance.

Playing against the wind in the opening half, the south-London side competed well in the opening quarter and held Tir Chonaill Gaels at 0-2 each.

The Towers even took the lead through John McCoy after 10 minutes before a David O’Brien free eventually tied the scores four minutes later.

However as the Gaels began to get on top in midfield, the game began to slowly slip away from the underdogs.

Six unanswered points from Chris Moroney, Tom Moriarty and two pointed frees each from O’Brien and Dara Kinneavey had the Towers playing catch-up football for the remainder of the game as they trailed 0-9 to 0-3 at half-time.

Now playing with the aid of the wind in the second-half, Towers’ much anticipated revival never materialised mainly due to the Gaels tightening their grip on possession in midfield where they introduced Gary Kane in place of Aidan McGeehan after half-time.

Within 10 minutes of the resumption the winners had stretched their advantage to nine points with scores from Kinneavey (2) and another O’Brien free.

Although Paul O’Donoghue and Daniel Davey battled bravely for the Towers they were never able to up their intensity sufficiently enough to trouble their opponents.

Meanwhile as the Towers resistance crumbled, the Gaels rang the changes as well as piling on the agony for their opponents with five further points in reply to efforts from Paul O’Donoghue and Dave Moran.
