The race is on for the Flat season

By DAVID THORPE

When Aintree’s last fence is jumped on Saturday the flat season will be upon us in earnest.

This week the column will cast its eye over a few of the horses to watch as the 2006 season gets under way.

Tolpuddle — Tommy Stack trains this fellow and while he is not a horse for the classic races he will pick up a race or two just below that level.

His recent third-placed finish off a mega-weight and bad draw in the Irish Lincoln at the Curragh shows he retains all his ability and is one to keep on the right side of.

David Junior — An excellent performer. Won a classic for Clare man Brian Meehan last season.

Claimed a big pot in Dubai recently and is definitely one to keep an eye on for races in the latter part of the season — especially at Royal Ascot and Kempton.

George Washington — I have a feeling this might be a big year for Aidan O’Brien.

The Ballydoyle maestro’s best juvenile is this fellow who boasts an impeccable record from last year.

This horse is currently favourite for the 2000 Guineas in June and among the leading contenders for the Derby.

Could be one of the all-time greats.
