Second-half blitz gives Mitchells victory

BY ANT McLAUGHLIN

Warwickshire Iintermediate football championships semi-finals

On Championship semi-final Sunday at Pairc na hÉireann John Mitchells and St. Marys both secured victories in their respective matches against Roger Casements and Sean McDermotts.

John Mitchells and Roger Casements toughed it out in an evenly-fought contest in the early stages with both teams nullifying their opponents tactics.

A 0-10 to 0-4 victory was only secured by Mitchells through a strong second-half display that saw them notch up 10 points in total.

Casements started well in the first-half and registered scores through Declan Hackett, Paddy Hoey and Justin Webb while Tony Joyce pulled the strings in an industrious display in the centre of the park.

Mitchells gamely matched their opponents and registered points on the scoreboard through Kieran Grace in open play and Declan Boylan from the dead ball.

As the game progressed Mitchells began to assert more dominance which was reflected in the second half scoring. Grace added to his tally with a total of three points while Boylan capped a fine display through five points from free taking.

Barry Sherley also added his name to the scoresheet for Mitchells.

In response Casements slotted over another score through John Hughes but the Coventry-based side were unable to conjure up any further scores.

By the final whistle Mitchells had done enough to secure a well earned victory that sees them through to the final.

Meanwhile on the second pitch St. Marys engineered themselves a 2-8 to 2-3 semi-final victory over Sean McDermotts in an entertaining match that saw four goals scored in the process.

St. Marys raised green flags through Johnny Bradley who managed 1-2 in total and Paul Flanagan.

Other notable scorers in the game were Peter Willis with four points, Andrew Willis with two points and Liam Hickie with another score from open play.

St. Marys were galvanised throughout by a stirring display from Keith McLoughlin who was one of the stand-out players on the field.

Sean McDermotts were in the running for long periods with Eamonn McMahon and Keith Sweeney in particular playing well.

Larry Donovan contributed to the scoring for McDermotts with a well-taken goal.

However it was not enough to wrestle victory from St Marys who kept their nerve and took away a five-point victory at full time.
