Sean Treacys end Gabriels unbeaten
run
Sean
Treacys 2-14 St. Gabriels 1-7
Senior Hurling Championship (Round 4)
Championship contenders St. Gabriels lost their unbeaten record to Sean
Treacys at Ruislip on Sunday.
In the pick of a disappointing weekend of hurling the Treacys continued
their steady improvement since their opening round defeat by Kilburn Gaels
to all but book their passage to the semi-finals.
Almost at full-strength Sean Treacys were never really troubled in their
latest test after facing the elements in the opening half.
A Dermot Skehan goal after 14 minutes preceded by two points from Eamon
Phelan and Brian Murphy gave them a decisive edge but to their credit
St. Gabriels aided by the accuracy of Pat Kelly from frees still remained
competitive.
Gabriels persistence was also rewarded after 20 minutes when an Aidan
McGrath goal put them into a 1-5 to 1-4 lead.
However Treacys responded instantly with three unanswered points from
Kevin Ivors, a Michael Mahony point and a Davy Burke free to regain the
initiative before a point from Pat Kelly’s ’65 on the stroke
of half-time concluded play in the opening half with the score Sean Treacys
1-7 St. Gabriels 1-5.
After a highly entertaining first-half the second half proved to be a
huge disappointment as Sean Treacys dominated from the resumption.
Without ever reaching their true potential the south-London team struggled
for long periods to make their superiority count on the scoreboard and
were still only 1-10 to 1-7 in front after 47 minutes.
However despite all the tenacity and industry of Gabriels midielders Mick
O’Meara and Damien Ryall their
attack made no impression against the Treacys defence where Michael Walsh,
Eamon Phelan, Niall Murphy and centre-back Keith Murphy were outstanding.
The Treacys dominated the closing quarter to score 1-4 without reply.
Facing rock-bottom Thomas McCurtains in the final round St. Gabriels appear
to be assured of a semi-final place.
The Treacys face hot favourites Robert Emmetts in their final game but
having already won two games they still look assured of a place in the
last four.
