Sean McDermotts are singing in the rain

SEAN McDERMOTTS 2-8

ROGER CASEMENTS 0-8

Warwickshire SFC Final Replay

Not even the remnants of Hurricane Helene could dampen the delight of Sean McDermotts as they stormed their way to a two-goal victory over Roger Casements at Pairc na hÉireann.

Goals in each half from Trevor Neville and Michael Hayden saw the Birmingham side claim county honours, denying Casements quest for three-in-a-row in the process.

McDermotts picked up from where they left off in the drawn fixture from the previous week scoring early points through Michael Hayden and captain Austin Bennett.

Casements responded in kind with an excellent score from Stephen McCarthy whose point from the touchline was arguably the score of the match.

However McDermotts sharp forward line was beginning to turn the screw. Lee Scanlon burst free on goal only to shoot straight at goalkeeper Eamon Fallon. Yet the reprieve was only temporary as Scanlon again pounced on the breaking ball to feed Trevor Neville to drive the ball home.

The lead was further extended before the break as Scanlon again caused problems in the Casements back line. The Coventry side ended the half with a second score from the boot of Kieron Boyle however by the whistle they found themselves facing a six-point deficit to overhaul.

It was dynamic Boyle who lead the Casements fight back with a superb free from the sideline early in the second-half but McDermotts responded with the critical blow.

A low free from Eamonn Hanlon was expertly met by Michael Hayden who fisted the ball past Fallon to send McDermotts fans into raptures — surely now their wait for championship success would be over.

As conditions worsened and the rains came Casements charged once more. Boyle was proving to be invaluable from free kicks, while Aiden Bannon contributed with a further three points from open play.

However, McDermotts refused to allow their two goal lead to slip away as they picked up the pace in the final stages. Andrew Walsh and the excellent Michael Hayden rounded off the day with two points created through swift counter attacks.

It was a strong display from Hayden who constantly proved a threat from midfield along with Hanlon.

The final whistle brought jubilation from the McDermotts faithful, and gave them a deserved victory which saw them pick up their first title since 2003.
