Petrov reveals real reasons for
leaving Celtic
Stilian Petrov
has spoken out about his reasons for quitting Celtic after a period of
discontent and hook up with his former boss Martin O’Neill.
The player put an end to months of speculation over his future by joining
Aston Villa for £8million.
He said: “To be valued so highly by Celtic and for Aston Villa to
have so much faith to pay that kind of money is a real privilege. I don’t
feel added pressure because of the fee.
“It feels strange to no longer be a Celtic player but for my own
sake I had to try something different.”
The player revealed that his decision to leave Celtic had been firm in
his mind for some time.
“It all started during a game against Inverness Caley Thistle at
the end of March. I remember it clearly. It was a Wednesday night and
I couldn’t get going. It was early in the match and I felt no motivation,
no drive inside my body to play football.
“It had never happened to me before and I tried to play on but there
was no power in my legs and my brain had switched off. It was at that
moment I decided to leave Scottish football.
“I didn’t want to leave Celtic but I had nothing left for
the domestic game.”
Petrov is now looking forward to the future and linking up with his former
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill.
He said: “I’m looking forward to working once more with Martin.
I’ve never hidden the fact that I wanted to play for him again but
when he left Celtic last year I never thought it would happen. He is a
special man, I hope we can sample some of the great memories we had together.
I believe Martin can bring success to Villa.
“I thank him for buying me and the club for backing his judgement.
It will also be good to be with John Robertson and Steve Walford. Getting
the chance to play in England is exciting and I’m confident I can
do well. I’m not scared of what is ahead.”
Petrov also thanked the Celtic fans for their support.
“Celtic’s supporters were brilliant and always positive towards
me. I want to thank them for the fantastic backing they gave me during
my seven years. I will be back to watch the team play. Gordon has made
good signings in Jan Venegoor of Hesselink and Thomas Gravesen.”
