Shunsuke Nakamura has revealed that he aims to make Celtic’s new Dutch signing Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink a Celtic hero.

The player made a stunning debut last Saturday against Hibs with an impressive winning goal after a first-half struggle against the Edinburgh side.

Said Naka: “Jan is a great striker and will do very well at Celtic. I know he has clever movement and has plenty of experience at the highest level. We can strike up some good combinations together. I’d like to think I’ll be able to provide Jan with some good crosses into the box. My strong point is being able to bring the best out of my teammates and I hope to be able to do that with him and the other strikers such as Maciej Zurawski.”

Nakamura is also looking forward to Champions League football with Celtic this season which includes a mouth-watering draw with Manchester United.

He said: “I was delighted when we drew Manchester United. I’m especially looking forward to playing at Old Trafford. I know it will be difficult but it’s something I can’t wait for.

“The draw looks good but every draw will be a difficult one. Playing at home will be a huge advantage to us. I watched Celtic v Barcelona from a few years ago and the fans backing was incredible.”

The Japanese player is now going to be an integral part of Gordon Strachan’s plans after securing a new three-year package which takes his wages up to £20,000 a week.

He said: “I deserved my new contract. I don’t think I was ever going to leave and I’m happy to be here for another few years.”

The Celtic manager is delighted with his contribution.

Strachan said: “It’s different with Naka. He can play unbelievable balls with either foot and you just never know where he is going to send it. He makes passes others can’t.”

Strachan added that the players must not lose sight of the SPL when competing in Europe.

“We’re looking forward to the Champions League but it remains to be seen how we cope with domestic and European football on a week-to-week basis. Few teams manage to do well in both.

“Chelsea have the world’s best squad and have won the Premiership two years in a row but they’ve never been in the Champions League Final.”
