Old rivals meet in semis

By Larry Cooney

Dublin overcame Wexford in a hard-fought game which sent them through to the semi-finals of the O’Byrne Cup.

Former Dub, Paul Bealin was hoping to put one over on his former colleagues but his oponents proved too strong.

Despite scoring a 12th minute penalty through Mattie Forde Wexford found themselves trailing by 0-9 to 1-1 at half-time. Dublin tagged four more points in the second-half and despite Wexford scoring seven they were unable to overcome the Leinster champions.

Laois also booked their place in the semi-finals of the same competition with a five-point win over Kildare.

They now play Offaly in the semi-finals. Goals from Chris Conway, Barry Brennan and a penalty from Fergal Byron were enough to see off the challenge of the Lilywhites.

Kildare did finish strongly but it was too late to overcome Laois. Meanwhile old foes Dublin and Meath now meet at Parnell Park in the other semi-final.
