Murray eyes world title shot

Cavan boxer Andrew Murray took the next step on the road to the top of
his profession with a comfortable defeat of Frederic Gosset at the Café
Royal in London.
The Irish Post-sponsored boxer completely outclassed his highly-regarded
French opponent from the first bell and there was never any doubt that
the Irishman would claim the win — which he was awarded on points
after six rounds. The crowd got behind Murray from the off and the Irishman
made a positive start, cornering his opponent with a series of heavy hits
early in the first two rounds. From that point on it was only a matter
of whether Murray would knock out his opponent.
He is undefeated in all five of his professional fights, and the St. Alban’s
based fighter will now turn his gaze Stateside as he seeks in the coming
months to get a shot at a world lightweight title. Murray has long been
regarded as the brightest prospect among the current crop of emerging
Irish fighters, which also includes John Duddy and Bernard Dunne.
Dubliner Dunne is making waves of his own in his fledgling pro career
after he defeated Argentinean Sergio Carlos in Italy on Saturday night.
That was Dunne’s 20th straight win as a pro and he is now expected
to face Michael Hunter in a European super-bantamweight clash. |
