McDermotts the masters

SEAN McDERMOTTS 2-11
FOUR MASTERS 0-11
Warwickshire GAA

SEAN McDermotts weathered the conditions and the Four Masters challenge to remain undefeated this year, at Holbrooke on Sunday.

The match was played in typical December weather, with high winds making a quality game of football impossible.

McDermotts had an instant advantage by winning the toss in the first half and electing to play with the wind.

It was therefore a case of damage limitation for Four Masters, and they did relatively well to restrict their talented opponents to just 2-5 in the opening period. The goals came courtesy of Des Kelly and Eamon Hanlon.

Unfortunately for Four Masters they were able to score just three points in the opening period, with all three of the scores coming from 16-year-old Declan Harkin.

It is a sign of how strong the wind was that some of the Four Masters kick-outs in the first half were struggling to clear the full-back line.

McDermotts haven’t amassed their unbeaten season without having their backs to the wall on several occasions, and the superior way they handled playing into the wind after the break was the reason they won.

A pair of points from Trevor Neville set them on their way, and while Four Masters were able to score points, it was goals they needed at that stage and they wouldn’t come against an excellent McDermotts rearguard.

The Harkin brothers were again to the fore for Four Masters, Declan finished with a personal tally on 0-7, while the veteran of the family, Brendan hit a point, while Danny also got on the score sheet. Ciaran Langford was their other scorer.

This result means that Four Masters have been eliminated from the league and the championship on score difference.

McDermotts completed their season as the undoubted kingpins of Warwickshire football in their 50th anniversary year.
