| Macklin has eyes on British title
Birmingham born Irish middleweight champion Matthew Macklin will fight
for the British title before the end of May.
The British Boxing Board of Control has confirmed Macklin as the next
mandatory challenger to current champion Jamie Moore. The board have decreed
that the title fight must happen before the end of May.
Prior to that Macklin will fight at Madison Square Garden on March 16
against Patrick Coleman on a bill headed by another Irish fighter John
Duddy who is a potential future opponent of Macklin. Duddy headlines the
so-called Shamrock Express card at the famed New York venue on the night
before St. Patrick’s Day.
Cavan fighter Andy Murray is set for a busy month with a brace of fights
in the next two weeks. Murray will next see action at the Hammersmith
Palais on March 8 against a yet to be confirmed opponent. After that fight
Murray will concentrate his attention on preparing for a fight on the
undercard to Brian Magee’s televised fight with Carl Froch at the
Kings’s Hall in Belfast in March.
Promising Galway-born welterweight John O’Donnell has his third
fight in as many weeks when he fights at York Hall in Bethnal Green this
Friday.
Still unbeaten as a professional it will be O’Donnell’s 10th
professional bout following his recent appearance at the National Stadium
in an impressive victory over the tough Zaid Bediouri.
The fight marks the latest step up the ladder for the highly-regarded
O’Donnell. There are also plans for O’Donnell to fight in
Canada and America this year.
Both Froch and O’Donnell are trained by Birmingham-Irishman Robert
McCracken.
