London look to forge ahead

The London footballers will be hoping to build on their encouraging performance against Roscommon when they face an improving Leitrim outfit at Ruislip on Sunday.

Leitrim were one of the most improved teams in Ireland last year and showed that they remain on an upward curve with an excellent performance in their National League opener against Leinster finalists Offaly though their loss to Clare was far less impressive.

Several talented players have rejoined the panel this year but star forward Declan Maxwell continues to be plagued by injury and will miss this match.

Following their impressive cameo appearances against Roscommon the Hehir brothers Paul and Senan will once again be used as impact substitutes as they look to recover full fitness after lengthy injury lay-offs.

Exiles manager Noel Dunning was relatively pleased with his team’s last outing against Roscommon but says that Leitrim will have an added incentive when they come to London.

He said: “We play Leitrim in the Connacht Championship later in the year and they have been trying out one or two new faces in the league. Those guys will want to put a marker down for that game.

“Leitrim would be like us in not having a massive pool of talent to draw from so they play pretty much their best available team in the league.”

Assessing the opposition Noel believes that Leitrim are a better team than Roscommon.

He said: “I would expect Leitrim to finish in the top four in this division. We played quite well last week and hopefully we can continue to develop as the league goes on and set ourselves up for a decent performance in the Championship.
