Limerick edge past rivals Tipp

Limerick had six points to spare over their great rivals Tipperary on Sunday in the Waterford Crystal tournament. As a prelude to their eagerly-awaited Championship clash in June this match offered only a scant insight.

The game was however marked by a welcome return to Limerick colours of Mark Keane who along with Brian Begley will be a key figure for the Shannonsiders in this year’s League and Championship.

Elsewhere there were victories for Clare, University of Limerick, and Waterford IT. Westmeath defeated Down in the Walsh Cup in a repeat of last year’s Christy Ring Cup final while in the Kehoe Cup there were victories for Roscommon, Carlow and Athlone IT.

In the Irelandwestairport.com SHC semi-finals holders NUIG are on course for a return trip to Ruislip after defeating GMIT. They meet Sligo IT in next week’s final.

The exhibition match between the hurling All-Stars of 2004 and 2005 in Singapore produced a real goal feast as the two sides hit 15 goals between them on top of sharing 27 points. The goal tally would have been even greater but for the performance of Wexford goalkeeper Damien Fitzhenry who, despite conceding six goals, earned the man-of-the-match award. Fitzhenry’s side managed by Cork’s former All-Ireland-winning manager Dónal O’Grady came out as winners at the Polo Grounds by 9-12 to 6-15. The 2004 side led by 5-8 to 3-6 at half-time with Limerick’s Niall Moran, Clare’s Tony Carmody, and Waterford’s Dan Shanahan and Eoin Kelly among the goalscorers.
