| Leinster win gives Cardiff the blues
By David Silver
Trialist Michael Berne grabbed the only try of the game at Donnybrook
on Saturday as Leinster recorded their first victory (16-9) of the Magners
League against a depleted Cardiff Blues. Australian centre Berne touched
down three minutes before the interval with Felipe Contepomi’s second-half
penalty brace being enough to secure an eighth consecutive home win for
Leinster.
The other Irish provinces all tasted defeat on the day. Ulster turned
in a poor performance as they lost 20-15 to Edinburgh Gunners at Muirfield.
Meanwhile Munster were also second best at Glasgow after a 19-point haul
from Scottish stand-off Dan Parks clinched a decisive 10-point victory
for the Glasgow Warriors while high-flying Connacht were humbled 37-15
at the Sportsground by Llanelli Scarlets. Ireland’s Simon Easterby
was among the try-scorers for the Welsh giants who led 20-8 at the interval.
A converted try and penalty from Connacht top scorer Mark McHugh was easily
eclipsed by Stephen Jones’ 17-point tally for the current leaders.
n Meanwhile in the Guinnes Premiership London Irish succumbed to a 23-11
defeat to table-toppers Bristol on Saturday.
They dominated the opening half and led 11-3 at the interval through a
Kieren Roche try and Riki Flutey penalty.
However a combination of poor decision-making and errors gifted Bristol
an unlikely victory after conceding tries to Lemi and Robinson.
