Leinster overwhelmed Toulouse 33 - Leinster 6
FANS watching this game will have been reminded of nothing more than
Ireland’s recent World Cup misadventure.
Leinster appeared well capable of winning the match until their French
opponents moved up several gears and completed a victory every bit as
comfortable as the scoreline suggested.
Leinster had started well, with Felipe Contepomi’s early penalty
giving them the lead.
But the damage was all done in the second period, when the French team
hit 26 points without reply; the tries came courtesy of Clerc, Courrent,
Heymanns, and Pointreaund.
Leinster Manager Micheal Cheika had named the same side which was so
impressive in defeating Leicester Tigers the previous week, but his charges
never looked like achieving a repeat of that result. A late Contepomi
penalty avoided the humiliation of going through the entire second-half
scoreless.
Munster’s best performers on the day were Shane Horgan, Robe Kearney
and Bernard Jackman.
It is a sign of the strength of this Toulouse team that they were able
to leave New Zealand international Byron Kelleher on the bench, and still
field seven French international backs in their team. |
