Hurlers aim for Kildare highspot

By Jerome O’Connell

London hurlers will put their promotion hopes on the line when they face Kildare on Saturday.

Mick O’Dea’s men showed a much-improved performance in beating Mayo but the London manager has long believed that Kildare — as Ring Cup semi-finalists — posed the biggest threat of all the teams in the league apart from Westmeath.

Kildare lost their opening match of the league to Mayo but their running of Ring Cup winners to two points was described by O’Dea as “excellent”.

He said: “I thought at the start of the season that Westmeath were maybe a bit ahead of the rest in this division and Kildare and ourselves. Kerry have surprised me a bit but I still think that if we get by Kildare promotion is a possibility.”

Kildare have been knocking around the top end of hurling’s lower tier for a number of years and new manager Noel Dormey has tried to improve the fitness levels.

He said: “We have very little hurling done. We are concentrating on the Ring Cup.”

London boss Mick O’Dea is expected to retain the same players who served him so well against Mayo although a decision will not be made until closer to the day about the prospects of captain Fergus McMahon starting.
