| Galway’s late surge ousts Kildare
Galway left
it late to record their first albeit unimpressive win of the campaign
with a 0-9 to 0-8 victory over Kildare in Newbridge.
Matthew Clancy hit the winner three minutes into injury-time to edge the
Tribesmen past a wasteful Kildare.
Kildare led at half-time by 0-4 to 0-1 but a series of spurned opportunities
allowed Galway to claw their way back into the game.
Kildare failed to score for the last 16 minutes of the game giving Galway
the impetus to score twice in injury time to gain the win. It was a lacklustre
match and defeat for the Lillywhites mean they have not beaten Galway
in a competitive match for almost 21 years.
Three players saw red at Celtic Park as Derry maintained their winning
start in the National League with a 1-14 to 2-07 win over Armagh.
It was a tenacious performance by the Derry men who recovered from the
sending-off of Paddy Bradley in the 12th minute and a four-point half-time
deficit.
Francie Bellew’s dismissal was the turning point of the game, without
their inspirational defender Armagh were not able to cope with the majestic
pairing of Paddy Bradley and Enda Muldoon.
Wexford secured their first win of the league as a 37th-minute goal from
former captain John Hudson helped them to a 1-15 to 2-11 win over Meath.
It was a tremendous result for Wexford as they trailed by eight points
after 12 minutes and five at half-time.
After the break Wexford’s defence were imperious and restricted
the Meath attack to just three points. The Slaneysiders will be relieved
to have rediscovered the form that brought them to last year’s League
final.
An understrength Laois side triumphed over Down by 1-17 to 1-12 at Potlaoise.
A sixth minute penalty converted by goalkeeper Fergal Byron gave them
an early lead and despite a late flurry by Down they held on to record
their first win of the campaign.
