Galway master weather to register victory

Galway 0-10
Armagh 0-8

Allianz National Football League Division 1B

A match which was dictated by atrocious weather conditions saw Galway claim their first league win of 2007.

The return of star forward Padraig Joyce had the Galway fans brimming with joy as Peter Forde’s side finally reached a decent standard having disappointed in their league campaign to date.

Their poor start to the year looked like continuing however as playing into a heavy wind they failed to register a single score in the first-half. Armagh contributed just six points with a brace of scores from Steven McDonnell being the pick of their points.

Galway defended tenaciously in the same period but Armagh were too slow in their build-up play. Despite the fact that they led by 0-6 to 0-0 at the interval Joe Kernan’s men looked far from comfortable.

The introduction of Niall Coleman at half-time gave Galway a ball-winning presence in the forwards and favourite son Joyce raised the white flag five times. Two scores each from his cousin Nicky and Joe Bergin secured a first victory of the year for Forde’s men.

The Galway manager believed that his team fully-deserved their victory.

He said: “It would have been soul-destroying not to get anything from this game given the amount of work we put in. Hopefully that will set us up for a few more wins in the coming weeks.”

Joe Kernan without the Crossmaglen Rangers contingent was furious after watching his team lose their second consecutive League match.

He said: “That was just not good enough. We didn’t stand up and be counted and we will have to do better.”

Armagh will improve dramatically when the Crossmaglen players return while Padraig Joyce remains one of the best forwards in Ireland though those around him will need to improve if Galway are to have a successful year.
