Galway comeback secures title Continuing the pattern
of their season the Galway minors staged a brave comeback to defeat Derry
and claim the All-Ireland title.
The Northern side led by 1-4 to 0-1 with 15 minutes gone with Lee Moore
hitting three points and Gavin McGeehan getting the goal.
Galway were struggling to win any ball in the middle third of the field.
Derry are an exceptionally tall team and it wasn’t until Galway
adopted a short passing game that they made some progress.
Four points in the final few minutes of the half were Galway’s reward,
and just two points separated the teams at half-time.
Derry rallied and made it a four-point game just after the interval but
were extremely wasteful with their possession from that point on hitting
just four more points — a tally which was never going to be enough
to win an All-Ireland final.
Galway continued to play only in fits and starts but they were making
their periods of dominance count.
Micheal Martyn was excellent from dead balls for the Corribsiders and
his scores plus a late Damien Reddington goal ensured that the trophy
was making its way to Connacht.
This was a battle between two teams who are very mature at minor level.
They had a rare cohesion to their play and both had strong players in
every position rather than just a handful of good individuals. It will
be no surprise if at least 10 of the players from both sides go one to
represent their county at senior level in the near future. |
