Galway boxers in action at York Hall

Wembley-based English super featherweight champion Billy Corcoran and welter-weight John O’Donnell will be in action at the York Hall in Bethnal Green this Friday. Corcoran is scheduled to box over eight or 10 rounds against an unnamed opponent.

Also in action will be former amateur sensation John O’Donnell who faces his first bout over eight rounds since turning professional three years ago.

As a junior amateur O’Donnell, who is also based in north west London, won everything including gold at the Olympics and has really impressed as a professional and looks set for stardom.

Corcoran has also been making steady progress since his impressive victory over former British champion Roy Rutherford last year. Also a member of a famous boxing family, Billy knocked out Rutherford in just three rounds to take the super-featherweight title.

Promoter Mick Hennessy said: “Billy’s proving hard to match at English title level after his devastating win over Roy Rutherford so we are going to have bring in a foreign opponent for the show on Friday.

“After this show we are really going to look to move Billy forwards. If no-one is prepared to fight him for the English title we will look to put him in eliminators for the British and Commonwealth. That is the level he is at now, he has come on very well as a professional.”

Also in action in early February will be St Albans-based Cavanman Andrew Murray. The unbeaten lightweight returns to the Cafe Royal in London’s West End on Thursday February 2 to meet Ian Reid. Last November Murray had a four-round points decision over Silence Saheed at the same venue.
