GAA needs World Series

Tyrone Manager Mickey Harte has called on the GAA to organise a World
Series club competition instead of focusing on the International Rules
series with Australia.
Harte said such an annual tournament would be feasible and would benefit
British clubs greatly.
He said: “I have thought for years that this would be a very positive
move forward by the GAA. Imagine how wonderful it would be to bring provincial
champions from across the world together for such a competition.
“It would help keep Gaelic games alive and well outside of Ireland
at a time when the pool of players is drying up.”
Different cups depending on ability could be played for and the funding
Harte says should come from Croke Park.
He said: “Yes I realise it would be very costly for teams from say
America or Australia to travel home with a full squad for the series but
the GAA should be able to help out and pay in full if necessary.”
Speaking at the 37th annual celebration of the Oisins club in Manchester
Harte told the 400-strong audience that for his proposal to work the current
International Rules series with Australia would have to be discontinued.
Harte said: “‘I don’t believe the series benefits the
GAA in any real way whereas a programme like the one I am proposing could
be imperative in keeping Gaelic games played by new waves of Irish children
in Britain for generations to come.”
