Fulham’s future’s bright

FULHAM IRISH 1-11
PARNELLS 1-08
Football League
Division 2

Intermediate Champions Fulham Irish showed they will not be overawed when competing in the senior Championship for the first time this season as they comfortably defeated Parnells at Ruislip on Sunday.

Fulham are an extremely well-drilled outfit and it is noticeably hard to single out individuals players on their team.

They work as a unit and such a policy should serve them well as they mix it with the big boys in 2007.

Moving the ball swiftly forward while defending in packs they will pose huge problems for football’s elite in London in the weeks and months to come.

A pair of picturesque early points from Cathal Lennon sent Fulham on their way but when Fintan McKeown replied with a brace of tidy points of his own it looked like a thriller might be on the cards.

Fulham pulled away again however with points from Tiarnan O’Rourke, the excellent Shane O’Dwyer and David Connolly to lead by 0-5 to 0-2 at the interval.

O’Dwyer’s second-half goal for Fulham was swiftly cancelled out when Killarney native Colm Fuller found the net for Parnells but Fulham were tacking on the points quickly with David Lennon, O’Rourke and Brian O’Neill raising white flags.

While both teams were short of key players it looks as though Fulham are a team with a strong panel for the new season.

Short of a host of key players from last year’s intermediate triumph they were still able to field an outfit which mixed youth and experience in equal measure and were always likely to prove too strong for a Parnells team still finding its feet this season.
