Faithful leave ’em feeling Down and out

It was men against boys in Birr as Offaly totally outclassed Down to pick up their first points of the 2007 League campaign.

The Faithful County men possess a full-forward line to rival any in the game. The excellent Joe Bergin hit 2-5 and Derek Molloy two goals to ensure that what always looked like a comfortable win became a rout.

In contrast Down’s principal failing was in attack their entire attacking division contributed just 1-1 between them.

Offaly are an inexperienced team going in the right direction. They could toughen up a bit and take their scores better but they have the makings of a very serious outfit.

The Faithful men raced into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead with 10 minutes gone and never looked back.

Down contributed the odd score but saw little of the ball. Andy Savage’s goal then reduced the deficit but Offaly hit two goals in as many minutes from Molloy to kill off the tie. Those strikes were swiftly complemented by four points to ensure that Offaly led by 3-6 to 1-7 at the change of ends.

Down were finding it difficult to win any ball in the middle third of the field and only scored four points in the second-half.

Bergin’s second goal and regular points from Brian Carroll ensured that the sizeable crowd had no cause for alarm as Offaly secured their first win of the year.

Manager John McIntyre was pleased with the performance saying: “When you have young players confidence is a major factor and this win will give our lads a boost ahead of the tougher matches ahead.”
