Dunning: “We made them look ordinary.”

While London’s only score from play on Sunday came from the knuckles of Chris Donnellan manager Noel Dunning insists he’s not too concerned with the lack of firepower at his disposal.

He said “At this stage of the season I’m not too worried about that to be honest. Niall Clinton is putting over the frees and our general play is improving with every game. If it was later in the year and we were still having problems scoring from play then I’d be worried but not under the current circumstances.”

Having held Monaghan to their lowest points tally in this year’s League season Dunning had praise for his defenders.

He said: “I think at times today we made them look ordinary and I’m delighted with that because as the table shows Monaghan are an excellent side. I suppose everyone expected them to come over here and give us a hiding but the lads fought for everything and we caused them massive problems at times out there.”

London may be bottom of the Division 2A table but recent performances suggest victory over Carlow later in the campaign could be a real possibility. Dunning said though that he’s not focussing on that game.

He said: “I haven’t earmarked the Carlow game for a win or anything. If anything I earmark every game for success. We’re just keeping our heads down and working away and I feel we’re way ahead of schedule for this time of year. It’s been difficult as we haven’t been able to train outdoors until this week so that makes me even happier with the progress we’ve made so far.”

Monaghan manager Seamus McEnaney expressed more satisfaction than delight with his charges’ performance.

He said: “Some of the lads were up at four this morning and it’s difficult to do that and expect us to be at the top of our game. I was pleased with our first-half performance against a strong breeze.

“Although we were down to 14 men for the last quarter I thought we coped well but our main objective was to come here and get two points and so I have to be happy with the result because that’s all that matters to us really.”
