DIVISiON 2a ROUND-UP

Wins for rivals prove ominous for London

Roscommon 1-10
Monaghan 2-11

Everywhere fans of the London football team looked on Sunday there were ominous signs for the remainder of the Exiles’ league campaign.

Promotion favourites Monaghan were very impressive in recording a 2-11 to 1-10 win over Roscommon at Hyde Park.

First-half goals from Tomas Freeman and Ciaran Hanratty ensured victory for the Ulstermen.

Paul Finlay was the star of the show on an impressive day for Monaghan as they picked up a couple of points unexpectedly.

Roscommon were no pushovers however and they got stronger as the game went on.

They might have got something from the game had they not missed a first-half penalty.

The introduction of Seamus O’Neill roused Roscommon in the second-half.

The midfielder is returning from injury and bagged 1-2 in the dying minutes to ensure a few nervous moments for Monaghan fans.

Leitrim 0-11
Offaly 0-10

Another emerging Connacht county, Leitrim, showed their mettle as they edged past Leinster finalists Offaly at Cloone by the narrowest of margins.

Dessie Dolan’s men who play London in the preliminary round of this year’s Connacht Championship raced into an early lead thanks to the efforts of the returning Ciaran Duignan who kicked five points on the day.

Niall McNamee was in excellent form for Offaly but his scores weren’t enough to prevent Leitrim leading by 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval.

Offaly fought back in the second-half and briefly levelled matters only for Shane Foley to pop up with the winning point in the closing minutes of the match.

Carlow 1-9
Clare 0-17

Paidi O Se’s managerial reign in the Banner got off to the best possible start at the weekend when his Clare side picked up the points at lowly Carlow.

However the Barrowmen made Clare fight all the way for the win and only for a flurry of late points by the Clare forwards the finish could have been a lot more tense for Paidi.
