Croydon in control

IN a double header on Saturday, the first Pearse v Croydon game got under way with opening scores in the first five minutes from Croydon’s Mel Hoare (1-0) and Lizzi Jones (1-0).

Pearse’s Sadie McCarthy made a fine pass to set-up the first of Pearses goals of the day. Pearce’s failed to add to their score from a missed opportunity from a free that followed.

As the Croydon girls kept pushing forward, Pearse’s Martha O’Neill did her utmost in full-back and kept clearing Croydon’s efforts. Jones was awarded a free that was swiftly deflected by goalie Mary Cathal. Mel Power added a further (0-2) to bring Croydon to (2-2) to (1-0) at half-time.

Settling into the second-half both teams fought hard to add to the scoreboard to seal their place in next month’s final, however Croydon were on top form and were not letting go of their chances. Mel Hoare added (0-1) for the black and whites while Pearse’s fought back with their second and final goal of the game.

Further scores for Croydon came from Karen Collins (1-1) and Anne McGowan (1-0). The final score Brothers Pearse (2-0) Croydon (4-4) guarantees the London champions rightly-earned place in the 2007 League final.
