GALWAY

Padraic Joyce will be absent from Galway’s opening NFL salvo after he was sent-off during Galway’s 3-9 to 0-10 FBD Connacht League encounter against GMIT at Spiddal.

Making his first appearance of the year, Joyce was red-carded by Galway referee Pat McGovern after 21 minutes for a challenge on GMIT’s Rory McTiernan.

MAYO

Mayo’s bid to land a long-awaited All-Ireland SFC title is to receive a fillip with news that a new supporters’ club is to be established in Dublin.

Mayo County Board Chairman James Waldron and team-manager John O’Mahony will launch the body, ‘Mayo GAA Dublin’ next month in the capital.

The official launch of the new club will take place at the Garda Club in Harrington Street on Tuesday, February 5.

It is understood that all monies raised will go towards defraying the costs of the senior, under-21 and minor teams.

CORK

CORK County Board sources have said that while administrators in the county were unhappy with their striking players bringing issues under negotiation into the public domain, they stressed they were “open for business” and remained keen to resolve the row.

The impasse centres on the change in the system of appointing senior team managers and the players revealed that they had proposed a written undertaking not to strike if the board would give its support to revisiting the issue in September/October, after the 2008 inter-county season concluded.

TYRONE

Tyrone club Fintona Pearses has denied reports that its members are banned from playing soccer.

The club is facing a player revolt as 15 members of their senior squad play both soccer and Gaelic football. The players feel such a decision is in breach of the GAA’s official guide and the club’s constitution.

It has been claimed that a motion to ban members from playing soccer was passed at an executive meeting on January 6 last. But Fintona secretary Dessie Campbell has refuted such claims.

“No, we have not taken a vote. They must be misreading the situation,” he said. “I don’t really want to discuss the situation but we are not banning soccer players.”
