County Chat: The big news from around your counties
KERRY
Paul Galvin will captain Kerry next year.
Galvin was nominated for the role after starring for divisional side Feale
Rangers in their recent Kerry SFC success.
He also achieved SHC honours with Lixnaw to complete a rare county championship
double.
Cork
Goalkeeper Donal Og Cusack insists that a number of Cork players will
quit the inter-county scene unless the county’s senior hurling and
football managers are given back the power to pick their own selectors.
He said: “What the players said in their statement, it’s not
even strike — they are just going to go away.
“Guys believe in the principle of this thing. Either you believe
it or you don’t. Hurling is my life, that is what I get out of bed
in the morning for. But in terms of selling yourself, guys just won’t
do it.”
Mayo
Ronan McGarrity is one of the favourites to land the Mayo Footballer Of
The Year Award — just months after being diagnosed with cancer.
The 26-year-old Mayo and Ballina Stephenites star was forced to stop playing
after receiving the dreaded news last spring but he successfully battled
the disease and was back playing within three months.
The towering midfielder said his battle with cancer had given him a new
perspective on life and football.
“There’s a lot of people out there worse than I was. I am
one of the fortunate ones. We caught it early and got the treatment. Hopefully,
it’s all behind me now.”
Kildare
New Lilywhite boss Kieran McGeeney is likely to be without ace attacker
Padraig O’Neill for much of the upcoming NFL as the St. Laurence’s
man must undergo a groin operation.
The U21 player who cemented his place in the Kildare attack this year
has been hampered by the problem for some time and the extent of the injury
became evident during an U21 club match last weekend when O’Neill
was only able to kick the ball with his left foot after joining the fray
with 20 minutes remaining. |
