Championship Chat: The big news from around your counties
Limerick
The Treatymen’s chances of recording a first Munster Championship
victory over Tipperary in more than a decade have been dealt a serious
blow with the news that talented forwards Niall Moran and Sean O’Connor
have picked up injuries and are doubtful for next weekend’s showdown.
The duo injured themselves in a challenge game against Wexford, and are
now no more than 50-50 to make the game.
Kerry
The injury worries which had been surrounding a number of Kerry footballers’
ahead of their clash with Waterford are beginning to ease.
Manager Pat O’Shea faced going into his first Championship match
in charge of the Kingdom without players such as Kieran Donaghy, Paul
Galvin and Killian Walsh, but speaking this week he revealed that he expects
to have a full squad to choose from for the clash with the Deice men.
Dublin
Ciaran Whelan has picked up a hamstring injury and may not be fit for
the Metropolitans Leinster Championship quarter-final clash with Meath.
Whelan picked up the injury in a challenge game against Derry.
The former All-Star midfielder was replaced by Johnny Magee during that
game and that player is the most likely to step up is Whelan is unfit.
Derry
Star Forward Paddy Bradley is to make a third appeal against his 12-week
suspension in a last-ditch bid to be cleared to play in next Sunday’s
Ulster SFC first round tie against Antrim.
Bradley seemed resigned to his fate after earlier appeals to the Derry
County Board and the Ulster Council were rejected, but he will now take
his case to the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA). He was suspended
for alleged ’minor physical interference’ with a referee after
a senior league match between Glenullin and Loup in April.
TYRONE
Talented Forward Ryan Mellon could be banned for the Ulster SFC semi-final
against Donegal on June 17 after receiving a straight red card in a club
game at the weekend.
Mellon was dismissed in first-half stoppage time in Moy’s SFC clash
with Kildress. He is automatically banned from club football for four
weeks, but if the offence warrants anything longer than that, he would
be suspended from county football as well.
Only the minimum punishment of a one-month ban does not cross over from
club to county. |
