| Carr could be tempted back into Irish
team Republic
of Ireland boss Steve Staunton is confident that Newcastle’s Stephen
Carr will reverse his decision to retire from international football.
Carr, 29, announced his international retirement after Ireland’s
failure to qualify for the World Cup finals.
“He has had a few problems this season, so he needs to be back playing,
but we are keeping an eye on the situation,” said Staunton.
“We have been in contact with him, and it's very positive.”
Carr has 39 Ireland caps but missed out on the 2002 World Cup finals because
of injury. Indeed the talented full-back’s career has been decimated
by injuries for a number of seasons.
Any return by Carr to the international fold would be a serious boost
to new Ireland manager Steve Staunton, who had expressed his surprise
at the Newcastle clubman’s decision to bow out at the relatively
young age of 29.
Carr has not played for Newcastle for months because of a recurrance of
a groin injury and it is not known when he will be able to resume action
at club level.
