Boxers aim high

By Larry Cooney

Irish fighters Andy Murray and Barney Doherty will be aiming to continue their climb up the professional ladder when they take to the ring in Bethnal Green in a week’s time.

Cavan-born St. Alban’s-based Murray will be confident of victory against the French-based journeyman fighter Frank Aurielo on September 24 in what will be his first fight since his impressive performance at the National Stadium in Tallaght, Dublin.

That victory was the Irish Post-sponsored boxer’s seventh win in a row as a professional, Murray’s unbeaten record should be extended in front of the live television cameras.

Murray enjoyed a successful amateur stint in Ireland before making the decision to base himself in Britain for his professional career.

The Cavan man is hopeful that he can earn a fight for a European or world title if he is able to continue the excellent start he has made to his professional career.

He said: “I am delighted to have won all of my fights to date. I have shown that I am capable of competing in the professional arena but now it’s time to progress to the next level. I want to be fighting for championships and be up against the best boxers around.”

Barney Doherty will be making his professional debut when he faces locally-based boxer Gavin Deacon on the same card.

The London Irish man turned professional six weeks ago and is tipped as a star of the future in the super-featherweight division. Doherty’s physical condition has improved in the weeks since he turned professional and his manager believes that he can now fulfill his true potential as he joins the paid ranks.

Manager Michael Helliet said: “Barney is one of the most enthusiastic boxers I have met. He’ll be keen to get his professional career off to a great start. But he must be patient and not go hell for leather as soon as the bell goes for the first round.”

The fight is at York Hall in Bethnal Green. For tickets tel: 0207 388 5999.
