Bohemians looking to blossom

By David Thorpe

No group of Eircom League fans have suffered quite as much as the Bohemians faithful in recent seasons.

It’s been four years since the Gypsies last lifted the League title in a season where Glen Crowe bagged 18 league goals. Since then Bohs have slipped down the pecking order in Eircom League terms.

But fans of the Gypsies have reason to be optimistic about the 2007-08 season. The sale of Dalymount Park at the start of the season transformed Bohemians into financial heavyweights and new manager Sean Connor set about assembling a squad capable of challenging for the title.

Glen Crowe rejoined the Phibsboro club from Shelbourne and is currently the League’s fourth top goal scorer.

In a bright start Bohemians won their first three games of the season but the club has stuttered in recent weeks.

However they’re still in contention for what would be their 10th title.

The principal reason why Bohemians haven’t been closer to winning the title in recent seasons is that they draw too many games and the same affliction has hampered their progress this season.

But on a sound financial footing for the first time in a decade the Gypsies fans might have something to cheer about in the coming years.

Bohs next League game will be a home fixture with Derry City on Saturday in a game they’ll expect to win.

Weekend results: Drogheda Rovers 1 Bohemians 0; Sligo United 1 Galway United 1; St. Patrick’s Athletic 4 Longford Town 2.

Fixtures: Friday, July 20, Galway United v Bray Wanderers; Shamrock Rovers v St. Patrick’s Athletic; Waterford United v Sligo Rovers. Saturday, July 21, Bohemians v Derry City; Longford Town v UCD.
