Big guns safely through... just

It was FAI Cup weekend for Eircom League clubs and while all of the big guns advanced to the next round it was a close call for most of them.

Big-spending Bohemians needed a late goal from Glen Crowe to defeat Leinster Senior League amateur side Malahide United.

Bohs were inclined to be over-elaborate in their passing, and lacked cutting edge in front of goal.

In contrast Malahide created the best chances of the first-half and were unlucky not to score.

But former Irish international Glen Crowe had the final say in an engrossing match, firing to the net on 79 minutes after good work from Darren Manserman on the wing created the opportunity.

Derry City were made to work hard for their place in the fourth round as they edged past local rivals Finn Harps in front of a capacity crowd at Ballybofey on Saturday night.

Harps went into this match on the back of a 13-game unbeaten run and looked like they could continue that form in a first-half which they largely dominated.

But a goal from big centre-half Ken Oman was enough to separate the teams.

Harps’ best chance fell to Declan Divin who failed to find the target from inside the box after 60 minutes.

The only set of fans who had a relatively stress-free evening were those belonging to cup specialists Longford Town. They proved much too strong for Donegal non-league outfit Fannad United.

The Midlanders may be doomed to relegation from the Premier Division but they put that behind them as they played with confidence and composure against the Ulster side.

Peter Doherty scored in the first-half and Dave Mooney headed home after the interval to secure a relatively comfortable victory for the men from the Midlands.
