Awesome Rebels run riot against Yellow Bellies

Wexford 0-7
Cork 0-19

Cork confirmed their position as kingpins of inter-county hurling with a devastating display against Wexford at the weekend. The Slaneysiders had no answer to Cork’s committed and clinical finishing as the All-Ireland Champions moved a step closer to the later stages of the league series.

After the 12-point mauling Cork now only need to defeat Clare this weekend to secure a play-off berth. Wexford on the other hand will be forced into a relegation semi-final encounter as the county side continue to blow hot and cold.

Cork who looked fitter and hungrier all over the field started the game a few gears higher than their hosts. An on-song Neil Ronan hit three unanswered points for the rebels and the Wexford faithful must have been worried the tie would be over by half-time. A mini-revival by the Slaneysiders saw them level matters though mid-way through the first half with Rory Jacob, Des Mythen and Eoin Quigley on target.

Brian Corcoran pointed to put Cork back into the lead and the Rebels went in at half-time leading 0-6 to 0-4.

Wexford had been wasteful in the first-half and Cork manager John Allen sent his side out for the second 35 in a more determined and ruthless frame of mind.

With All-Stars Sean Og O’hAilpin and the rock Diarmuid O’Sullivan in fine form Cork pulled away from Wexford in the second-half as a result. The return of O’hAilpin to the county side seemed to spur on his teammates. The talented Corkman made his first start since the All-Ireland final last year.

Cork scored five quickfire points after the break to pull away from their opponents leading by 0-12 to 0-5 by the 50th minute. Neil Ronan who finished the day with 10 points was as accurate from play as he was from placed balls.

Wexford had no answer to Cork’s attack and a beautifully-taken point from Ronan Curran from 100 yards completed the Model County’s misery.
