| Attention focused on Sandown’s Chase
BY DAVID THORPE
Many of the horses
prominent in the market for the Aintree Grand National will appear at
Sandown on Saturday for the Racing Post handicap.
Lacoudal and Limerick Boy are near the top of the market — these
are probably the classiest horses in the race and the latter from the
in-form Venetia Williams yard certainly has a real chance.
Paul Nicholls has a number of entries including potential Aintree favourite
Silver Birch but the horse from his string most likely to feature is Le
Roi Miguel. An excellent jumper with a good turn of foot it is notable
that this fellow has no fancy entries at any of the big festivals and
maybe this is the race he is being laid out for.
Certainly he has a better chance than Lacoudal who has been campaigned
quite extensively of late and may be in the grip of the handicapper by
now.
The French-trained L’Ami and Tikram have both been threatening to
win good handicaps for some time and if they are a long price on the day
of the race then they merit each-way consideration.
It looks, however, like a race between Limerick Boy and Le Roi Miguel.
Favour the latter because he may be a longer price on the day and may
just about represent value in a race which could provide an insight into
the form of many horses ahead of Cheltenham, Punchestown, and Aintree.
