Workers receive big tax return The Irish Revenue Commissioners
have reportedly paid back more than €440million to workers who paid
too much tax last year.
Reports say the refunds were made to almost 668,000 PAYE workers who put
in claims following a publicity campaign by the Revenue, with refunds
owed to workers under a range of tax reliefs for rent payments, trade
union subscriptions and bin charges.
The huge payout has now prompted fresh calls for a new system to make
it easier for workers to reclaim money.
Drink Driving
The number of drink-driving incidents recorded over the recent Irish
bank holiday weekend is up on the same period last year.
Provisional garda figures released indicate that between August 3-6 there
were 384 incidents, compared to 327 for the August bank holiday 2006.
Three people lost their lives on the roads over the weekend, whereas last
year five people died during the corresponding period and gardaí
have said enforcement activities in this area of road safety will continue
to be prioritised.
Meat exports
Ireland’s Minister for Agriculture Mary Coughlan has introduced
a new system of certification for the importation of all livestock and
meat products from the North.
The move comes as the authorities continue their efforts to contain an
outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the Surrey area of England.
The North is exempt from the EU ban on meat and livestock exports from
Britain but Ms Coughlan says three days’ notice will be required
for all imports, accompanied by the appropriate documentation.
Cannabis forest
Gardaí in Co. Kerry are preparing a file for the Director of Public
Prosecutions (DPP) following the discovery of a cannabis plantation in
a privately- owned forest near Killarney.
More than 100 cannabis plants were found in the area and gardaí
say they would have been worth ?1,000 each when harvested.
A man was arrested but has since been released pending instructions from
the DPP. |
