Thousands of passengers stranded by rail strike ONE
man’s dispute with Irish Rail sparked an unofficial strike which
left thousands of rail passengers stranded in Cork and Dublin.
Workers at Cork’s Kent Station walked off the job in support of
a key member of the company’s inspection team.
The action came after a non-core member was rostered to work the lucrative
night shift in contravention of agreed practices.
The move resulted in the cancellation of all hourly inter-city trains
between Cork and Dublin and commuter services between Cork, Cobh and Mallow
for four hours.
The strike action was finally ended after union officials intervened.
National Bus and Rail Union assistant general secretary Dermot O’Leary
said the unofficial strike action was unacceptable.
“We do not condone the action but the frustration of our members
simply boiled over,” he said.
A spokesman for Irish Rail apologised for the disruption to services.
Talks are now under way to try to find a permanent solution to the dispute. |
