Sporting history is up for grabs

FANCY owning a piece of Irish sporting history?

Well now is your chance. Thanks to a major new auction being held in Dublin this month collectors can get their hands on a highly-prized match ticket for the Bloody Sunday game in 1920.

Other pieces include the All Ireland medals for Wexford’s four-in-a-row 1915-1918 side as well as a number of valuable Irish coins, manuscript letters, rare books and other memorabilia.

The auctioneers for the event are Mealy’s of Castlecomer who have been conducting sales of antiques since 1934.

Irish-born auctioneer and Green Party activist Noel Lynch believes the auction will prove extremely successful.

He said: “Irish memorabilia is booming and very hard to find. GAA medals in particular have been shooting up in price. It would not surprise me if the auction estimates were well exceeded.”

Mr Lynch runs the Green Room on London’s Archway Road a charity shop that specialises in quirky collector items.

Presently in stock is a camera previously owned by Taoiseach John A. Costello; a table cloth owned by Erskine Childers; prison phone cards signed by Mad Dog Adair and Reggie Kray and a rare record from 1955 featuring the sounds of Crumlin Road Jail in Belfast.

The auction takes place in The Tara Towers Hotel, Dublin on March 20.
