Residents overruled as marina plan is approved

Despite strong objection from thousands of residents in a Co. Wicklow town a €300million marina and harbour re-development has given the go-ahead by planners with work expected to start within months and to take between four to five years to complete.

Developed by Wicklow County Council and private sector partner the Sispar Consortium the Greystones project will include over 340 apartments, shops, a 230-berth marina, public plaza and boardwalk.

Planning authority An Bord Pleanala granted permission with 13 conditions attached, which included the development of a traffic calming scheme during construction work, beach nourishment provisions and the presence of on-site archaeologists during excavation work.

Kerry campaign

Senior executives from Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland have met to review the ?6million regional marketing campaign which has been in full-swing this year in Britain, Europe and the United States and to agree on the up-coming autumn plan to maximize the number of visitors to the south-west.

A range of activities have been undertaken including radio promotions highlighting events such as the Rose of Tralee festival, as well as holiday and travel features in British publications.

Tourism Ireland’s Niall Gibbons said the trend is now towards shorter, more frequent breaks which tend to favour easily accessible, urban destinations and that has affected the balance of tourism growth to more rural parts of Ireland.

Online degree

The Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) in Dublin has awarded the world’s first online masters degrees to science graduates from 11 different countries, including two graduates from Britain and 16 from the US, with others coming from countries across Europe and as far afield as Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, India, Malaysia and Taiwan.

The study-from-home MSc in Pharmaceutical Medicine is a collaboration between Hibernia and pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and run in conjunction with the RCSI and Harvard University, Boston, in the US, and is widely seen as a unique e-learning programme which removes the main mobility barrier in attracting leading figures in research and development to Ireland.
